Sister Martha Ann Kirk has taught art in every grade from first through university. She invites you to encourage young people to create and to share their work in the Artistic Bridges project Artistic Bridges (charterforcompassion.org) reaching out in over a hundred languages.
She holds a Th.D. in Theology and the Arts from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA, has been a professor of Religious Studies and of the Arts at University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas, teaching over 7,000 students, writing six books, and visiting 32 countries often leading students. She is interested in furthering San Antonio’s flourishing as a City of Compassion within the global Charter for Compassion movement leading to respect and justice for all and for the earth itself. She has been helping to develop www.CompassionateUSA.org.
Sister Martha Ann has been involved in various interfaith dialogues for four decades and was a scholar-in-residence at Tantur Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem. She has had many opportunities through Interfaith America grants since 2017. She has been the San Antonio Peace Laureate, the Texas Pax Christi Peacemaker of the Year, and recognized in various ways for building interfaith and intercultural bridges. She was included in the PBS Women, War, and Peace series as a “Teacher of Peace.”
She is active in promoting sustainability, service learning, social justice education, and spirituality at the University of the Incarnate Word and has served in leadership in the Catholic Sisters Congregation to which she belongs, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio, Texas.
